Meanwhile, we have a couple of mini pumpkins that are starting to look promising now, after a very slow start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d started off some chard and brassica seedlings, but sadly the local snails have made short work of those. I&#8217;m hoping to catch up with another sowing this month, and to get some more winter salads going too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a self-confessed fair weather gardener, the rainy weather has been keeping me indoors more recently. However, I&#8217;m determined to make a effort to tidy up the garden this month; there&#8217;s going to be lots to go into the compost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeds to sow in September<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the seeds you can sow this month will give you a quick crop before the cooler weather sets in, and others will provide slow growing crops over winter or start sprouting next spring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of my favourite places to get seeds and small plants include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tidd.ly\/48QqVF8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dobies<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 great seed catalogue from long-established company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/41TzD3i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marshalls Garden<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 good variety of seedlings and plants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3TYlO1O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RHS<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 good for \u2018Garden Merit\u2019 tried and tested varieties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3vtYb74\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suttons<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 lots of 99p seeds and handy advice for beginners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3vqU8rU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thompson &amp; Morgan<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 all kinds of seeds, strawberry plants, fruit bushes etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3XbjBBq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wilko<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the bargain seeds are back, plus lots of multi-buy offers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:13px\"><em>This site may get paid a small amount of commission for purchases made after clicking some of the links in this post. Planting out in September<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Biennial herb seedlings (chives, parsley)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seedlings or clumps of perennial herbs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Japanese overwintering onion sets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other winter onions and shallots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garlic cloves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring greens and Spring cabbages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Vegetable care in September<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bring in winter herb plants for use indoors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut asparagus down to ground level and mulch it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Divide and lift perennial herbs such as mint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earth up and\/or stake large winter brassicas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get rid of potato foliage (haulms) if blight threatens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harden pumpkins for 10 days after cutting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feed leeks a balanced liquid feed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ripen tomatoes indoors if weather turns bad<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lift Witloof chicory and place in sand for forcing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. General jobs to keep on top of in September<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be prepared to protect crops if frost threatens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sterilise and store used pots, canes, plant labels etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover areas of bare soil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get composting areas ready for lots of new materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the garden tidy to aid pest control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save seeds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;Enjoying this article?
