Growing conditions are getting cooler and darker in the UK this month, which slows everything plant-related down as we head towards midwinter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there&#8217;s a small amount of activity you could do now to get ahead for next season. They&#8217;re fairly minor tasks that can be completed quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Care of vegetables in December<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check stored onions and roots for signs of rot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8216;Force&#8217; Whitloof chicory roots (sprout them in the dark)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Net brassicas and remove any yellowed leaves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant winter alliums (onions, shallots, garlic)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect broad beans and winter salad with fleece or cloches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Care of fruit in December<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check stored apples and pears for signs of rot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant trees, bushes and rhubarb if the ground isn\u2019t frozen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prune dormant trees and vines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.
