I&#8217;ve been hunting down all kinds of free and cheap ways to cool down, making the sunny weather much for pleasant and enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free ways to beat the heat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to forget some of the best free options if you&#8217;re feeling hot and flustered. Let&#8217;s run through a few of the best things to do that are technically free, in case you need a quick reminder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In moderate heat, try to create a through draught of air &#8211; for example opening windows at the front and back of your home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In high heat, such as a hot weather warning from the Met Office, close windows and curtains or blinds in south-facing rooms to stop them getting even hotter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use what you already have: put ice from the freezer into drinks, use an insulated flask to keep drinks cold (it&#8217;s not just for hot coffee!), and put pillowcases or cotton sheets into the freezer before bedtime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a quick cool shower or run cold water on your wrists, or put a cold damp towel on the back of your neck (okay, technically costs a little if you&#8217;re on a water meter).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get up early and do chores or exercise before it gets too hot, including walking pets on cooler pavements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear loose and breathable clothing if possible. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/iced-coffee.jpg\" alt=\"iced coffee\" class=\"wp-image-83007 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"816\" height=\"816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/iced-coffee.jpg\" alt=\"iced coffee\" class=\"wp-image-83007 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/iced-coffee.jpg 816w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/iced-coffee-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/iced-coffee-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/iced-coffee-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 816px) 100vw, 816px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember to be sun safe: try to avoid being in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, usually 11am to 3pm, if you can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brickwork and paving slabs absorb heat from the sun during the day then radiate it back out at night like a storage heater. Get those parasols, awnings and sail shades open if you already own them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One final freebie tip: heat rises, so go low if you have to. Sleep on the floor or move to a downstairs room if you can when the weather&#8217;s unbearably close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheap ways to cool down, day &amp; night<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at a few cheap options from \u00a31 to \u00a320 to beat the heat. You can find pocket fans, spray bottles, ice lolly moulds and ice cube trays to get your chill on.
