Let&#8217;s get in and out of the front door with less mess and less fuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This functional space doesn&#8217;t always mean a traditional hallway though. Some houses and flats simply don&#8217;t have a hall, and the front door opens straight into a living space. Others have a small amount of storage in a cupboard under the stairs, or a different spot where people drop off their bags and shoes or dump their post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live in a shared house, you might have a personal &#8216;drop zone&#8217; just inside your bedroom door where the clutter collects. Alternatively, some larger homes have a cloakroom or boot room inside, or a porch or similar structure outside the front or back door. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever your hallway or hallway-like space is like, it&#8217;s such a good feeling to make calm out of chaos here. Come home to a more welcoming place, and know exactly where everything important is when you&#8217;re rushing out of the house in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which hallway or similar area to choose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s essential to pick a small area to sort out, ideally one that will take ten minutes or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t try to do a whole hallway, porch or similar area at once, because it&#8217;s so easy to get overwhelmed or distracted. Stick to a limited spot that you know you can sort out in the time allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of spots for a mini hallway declutter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pile of shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boot rack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overloaded coat hooks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Console table<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pile of post<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Box or bench in a porch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bikes or scooters, lights and protective gear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Umbrellas or rain coats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dog leads and toys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prams, pushchairs and baby stuff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handbags, shopping bags etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emergency go-bag for hospital, maternity unit, vet trip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hats, scarves and gloves pile<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s just a few quick ideas to get you started, and I\u2019m sure you can think up some more of your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IKEA-hallway-storage-inspiration.jpg\" alt=\"IKEA hallway storage inspiration\" class=\"wp-image-85224 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"816\" height=\"568\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IKEA-hallway-storage-inspiration.jpg\" alt=\"IKEA hallway storage inspiration\" class=\"wp-image-85224 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IKEA-hallway-storage-inspiration.jpg 816w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IKEA-hallway-storage-inspiration-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IKEA-hallway-storage-inspiration-768x535.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 816px) 100vw, 816px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to do your mini hallway declutter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve chosen the exact area, the most important thing do do next is this:&nbsp;<strong>decide exactly how you want it to function<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the practicalities of entering and leaving, and what your priorities are. Consider how you might tackle any existing problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hallway declutter format is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clear up the space (for example, get bikes, post or boots out of the way)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean the area (dust, wipe, vacuum, etc)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sort through the clutter (keep here, keep but move somewhere else, recycle, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/shop\/donating-goods\/book-furniture-collection-near-me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donate furniture<\/a><\/strong> or other items, sell)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add structure if needed (boxes, shelf, coat rack, shoe rack, small table) &#8211; <em>you might need to improvise something temporarily<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add other items if you like (pictures, mirror, ornaments)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put the \u2018keep here\u2019 things back, grouping similar items together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other immediate jobs (put things away elsewere, bin it, recycle it)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose timeframe for other tasks (go to charity shop, mend shoes, list on Vinted)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a shopping list (what do you still need for this space, if anything?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also consider <strong>safety and security<\/strong>: don&#8217;t leave handbags, keys, purses or other valuables in sight of nearby windows. As ever, out of sight usually means out of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve gone through the coats on the hooks, moving unseasonal ones into storage and keeping the most used this-season ones within easy reach for a quick getaway in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was one coat that had seen better days, but still had some wear left in it, so I gave it a wash and dry before the end of the week. Then it was taken to a charity drop off point that weekend.
