This usually means hanging out in the back garden, on a patio or deck, or maybe out on a balcony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, making the most of the outdoor space starts with sprucing everything up, ideally without harming the environment. It&#8217;s much more cost effective to <strong>make the most of what you already have<\/strong>, whether that&#8217;s <strong>cleaning, mending or upcycling<\/strong>, so let&#8217;s focus on those activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My May outdoor living to-do list <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of things to do around this time of year, and I tend to tackle them in this order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tidying up messy spaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deep cleaning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treating and protecting surfaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Furniture care (or replacement)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making things prettier or more stylish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tidying up makes all the other jobs much easier, and there&#8217;s something quite cathartic about having a good old chuck out. Get rid of anything that you no longer want or use, especially if it&#8217;s broken beyond repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That might include a trip to the tip, getting a council collection for smaller items, breaking things down and putting them in a recycling bin, selling stuff, or giving things away on your local Facebook group or via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freecycle.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freecycle<\/a>, Freegle or Trash Nothing. We&#8217;ve done a combination of using the recycling bin and local Facebook giveaways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve also made time to sweep up fallen leaves, pull up weeds, and get them into a compost bin. If you have a larger garden, you might also want to make some leafmould for mulching plants later in the year &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/soil-composts-mulches\/leaf-mould\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easy RHS instructions here<\/a>. If you don&#8217;t have a compost bin, check with your council about garden waste collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broken plant pots can be cracked up into smaller pieces to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jackwallington.com\/crocks-in-pots-what-is-the-myth-that-they-do-or-dont-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make crocks<\/a>, giving your plants in containers easier drainage. It also seems to stop so much compost falling out of the holes at the bottom of the pots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deep cleaning patios, paths &amp; decks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garden-path.jpg\" alt=\"Garden path with fallen magnolia petals and weeds between the stones\" class=\"wp-image-85680 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garden-path.jpg\" alt=\"Garden path with fallen magnolia petals and weeds between the stones\" class=\"wp-image-85680 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garden-path.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garden-path-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the easiest things to do here is use a pressure washer. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/4aeghZk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">buy one on offer<\/a>, rent one for the day from a well-known company <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3UXBdj2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">such as Jewson<\/a>, or perhaps borrow one from a neighbour (and maybe give them something in return e.g. loan them a lawnmower, or give them a cake or bottle of wine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stubborn weeds and moss on paths can be removed with a good cheap <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/44EdMy7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">weed knife or patio scraper<\/a>. It&#8217;s also remarkable how much you can get rid of just by pouring some boiling water straight onto the roots, then waiting for a few hours. You don&#8217;t need to harm wildlife with harsh chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are still marks and stains remaining after this, a quick scrub with some distilled vinegar and a stiff brush will often do the trick. For anything stubborn I recommend using <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/4dzOchN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Algon Organic path &amp; patio cleaner<\/a>, which is stronger, but please keep pets and children away while you&#8217;re using it, and remember to rinse things down properly afterwards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/fixing-up-wooden-decking-in-the-Spring-with-Penny-Golightly.jpg\" alt=\"fixing up wooden decking in the Spring\" class=\"wp-image-85682 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"453\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/fixing-up-wooden-decking-in-the-Spring-with-Penny-Golightly.jpg\" alt=\"fixing up wooden decking in the Spring\" class=\"wp-image-85682 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/fixing-up-wooden-decking-in-the-Spring-with-Penny-Golightly.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/fixing-up-wooden-decking-in-the-Spring-with-Penny-Golightly-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For woodwork problems, you might need to use a proprietary treatment to clear up mould or fungus, and some sealant or decking oil after that. I tend to pick up something at B&amp;Q to <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3JS7ykS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">clean &amp; treat<\/a> then <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/44yOd1z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">seal or stain<\/a>, and they have eco-friendly options in stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outdoor life on a budget: furniture care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garen-furniture-on-patio-that-needs-a-clean-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"garden furniture on a patio that needs a clean\" class=\"wp-image-85684 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garen-furniture-on-patio-that-needs-a-clean-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"garden furniture on a patio that needs a clean\" class=\"wp-image-85684 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garen-furniture-on-patio-that-needs-a-clean-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garen-furniture-on-patio-that-needs-a-clean-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garen-furniture-on-patio-that-needs-a-clean-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/garen-furniture-on-patio-that-needs-a-clean.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If, unlike me, you were sensible and put your outdoor furniture away in a shed or the garage at the end of last year, you might not need to do anything to it other than a quick wipe down with a lightly dampened cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately our outdoor dining table is too big to go in our shed, so it&#8217;s been outside for months under a cover. This means I&#8217;ll have to peel back the cover and see what&#8217;s lurking underneath, and then probably give the table a good scrub and a repaint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s an old piece of wooden furniture, but we&#8217;ve upcycled it with some coloured outdoor paint. It&#8217;s very easy to quickly sand back any flaking areas and give those chairs, tables or benches a coat or two. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We used <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/44G88vt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cuprinol Garden Shades<\/a> matt multi-surface exterior wood paint for a splash of colour in our outdoor dining area. There&#8217;s a shade for just about every personality and taste, whether you&#8217;re going for a bold or natural look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The matching chairs fortunately did  fit in the shed, so they&#8217;re in much better condition and won&#8217;t need to be repainted. They&#8217;ve already come up fine with a quick dust. Phew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next, making outdoor spaces pretty \/ stylish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final part of our Golightly Gardens outdoor living glow up will be making everything pretty.
