However, if you are a Christmassy kind of person, a little of bit of effort this month makes it easier to be organised and generally keep the costs down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages of September Xmas planning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two very good reasons to do some Christmas prep during this month. Firstly, starting those preparations in September helps you spread the expense over four pay packets, and it gives you more time to find deals and discounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, this is the month when lots of festive season stock arrives in the shops. It allows you to have a good look at what&#8217;s available, and pick out some favourites. Also, if there&#8217;s something that&#8217;s both affordable and likely to sell out quickly, you can be an early bird and snap it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8216;Christmas prep in September&#8217; checklist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do as much or as little as you like this month. It&#8217;s whatever you&#8217;re in the mood for really, but here&#8217;s a list of most of the things that you could do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Christmas prep in September<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s some general organisation questions to ask yourself (and maybe others):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kind of Christmas do you want to have? Quiet? Busy? Thrifty? Traditional? Stylish? Drink (non-perishables, bookings)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few opportunities this month for some long-term planning, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Getting a rough menu together for what you&#8217;d like to cook<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finding a few new recipes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Booking a supermarket delivery slot: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/47KDLpk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ocado<\/a><\/strong> (SmartPass customers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Booking festive food for click &amp; collect: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3TO7OH0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">M&amp;S<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/4gE6Yq3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Food to Order by Sainsbury&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stocking up on drinks offers: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3ZGF3j3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tesco<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/4dq7J3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Morrisons<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3wjHID1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ASDA<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3N0ipKS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Laithwaite&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3XLvU6n\">Majestic Wine<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making one or two things and freezing them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You might also want to start picking up a few ingredients and food that has a long shelf life, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Baking ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frozen: turkey, desserts, party snacks, puff pastry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shelf-stable: biscuits, jar sauces, chocolates (hide them!), Christmas pudding etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I start putting one or two low cost festive treats into the shopping basket each week from September onwards so we don&#8217;t have to do a massive shop late in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel arrangements in September<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not always possible to arrange at this point, but consider these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tentatively agree who&#8217;s travelling where and when, or who you&#8217;re hosting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Book the car in if it needs a service or repairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hunt around for cheap advance tickets for flights, train or bus &#8211; <strong><em>late September and early October<\/em><\/strong> are usually the time for the best prices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renew passes and discount railcards if required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Christmas-decorations-in-September.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas decorations in September\" class=\"wp-image-85914 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"816\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Christmas-decorations-in-September.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas decorations in September\" class=\"wp-image-85914 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Christmas-decorations-in-September.jpg 816w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Christmas-decorations-in-September-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Christmas-decorations-in-September-768x501.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 816px) 100vw, 816px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Christmas decorations prep this month<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s no pressure to start decorating, but you might like to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Look around at new decorations that are starting to go on sale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy arts and crafts materials, reusable bags, wrapping paper etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try designing your own Christmas cards, if you&#8217;re getting some printed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Homemade Christmas prep in September<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I know a lot of you love a good homemade Christmas, so how about any of these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Making chutneys, jams, or infused drinks such as sloe gin or blackberry brandy &#8211; gives them time to mature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handmade gifts such as knitted socks, crochet blankets, soaps (many need curing time), felt toys etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buying materials for making up hampers at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/47KoHIj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Wilko<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3XYVUMG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Amazon UK<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:13px\"><em>This site may get paid a small amount of commission for purchases made after clicking some of the links in this post.
