{"id":9163,"date":"2014-07-01T12:24:14","date_gmt":"2014-07-01T11:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/\/?p=9163"},"modified":"2023-05-13T18:55:40","modified_gmt":"2023-05-13T17:55:40","slug":"paying-holiday-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/paying-holiday-year\/","title":{"rendered":"How are you paying for your holiday this year?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent survey of consumer spending habits*, carried out on behalf of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fscs.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Services Compensation Scheme<\/a><\/strong> (FSCS), has highlighted some interesting attitudes and behaviours of holidaymakers from the UK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/FSCS-Blog-Image-e1404213471820.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9164 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/FSCS-Blog-Image-e1404213471820.jpg\" alt=\"FSCS Blog Image\" width=\"550\" height=\"270\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9164 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennygolightly.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/FSCS-Blog-Image-e1404213471820.jpg\" alt=\"FSCS Blog Image\" width=\"550\" height=\"270\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Saving up for a holiday<\/h2>\n<p>It turns out that we are a nation of savers after all, with 65% of those surveyed saying that they choose to save for their holiday. Over half (51%) save up in advance to cover the entire cost of the trip, while a further 14% will save some money but also pay at least part of the cost with loans or credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 In the 24-44 age group, the savings habit is greatest, with 75% saying that they put money aside in advance for their holidays.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 A lucky 22% of holidaymakers said they don&#8217;t need to save as they have enough money already to pay for their holiday.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Only 5% of holidaymakers surveyed said they\u2019d pay for the entire cost of their holiday on loans or credit cards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PG tip<\/strong>: Saving into a holiday fund is much cheaper in the long run than putting a holiday on a credit card or taking out a loan \u2013 especially if you have no clear plan of how to pay off the debt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PG tip<\/strong>: You can check that your holiday funds are protected by visiting <strong>fscs.org.uk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Spending money on holiday<\/h2>\n<p>Research has found that a majority of Brits are brilliant at budgeting as two thirds (66%) of people surveyed have a budget set for holiday expenses. However, only a fifth (20%) actually stick to their budgets \u2013 showing that for some it\u2019s easy to get carried away. Just under two fifths (37%) spent slightly or significantly more than planned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PG tip<\/strong>: Many Brits are able to budget a little extra for holiday spending money because they cut back on hotel spending and search out the cheapest deals on flights.<\/p>\n<h2>Bringing money home post-holiday<\/h2>\n<p>On average, people have \u00a370-worth of foreign currency stored at home for their next holiday, and 18% of those surveyed said they\u2019d brought back over \u00a3100-worth. This<br \/>\nmeans that in total people have almost \u00a32.85 billion in foreign currency stashed at home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PG tip<\/strong>: if you\u2019re not planning a trip abroad in the foreseeable future, shop around for the best deal to change leftover holiday cash back into Sterling.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Do you save up in advance for your holidays?
